This is a stunning hand-carved Afro-Haitian Chest made of solid “Chenn Wood”, also known as Haitian or Jamaican Oak. Acquired in Haiti in the 1980s, it looks even more AMAZING in person-the woodgrain and color is truly beautiful! This Chest is quite unique due to its’ size. Mature, old-growth “Chenn” is a prized hardwood historically sought after by boat builders and used in luxury housing for high end doors, trim and furniture- so large pieces of this wood are quite expensive. The raw material is far too expensive for the average tourist-trade oriented crafter. So this was either a piece made of “found” or repurposed lumber or it was specifically made as an Artisan piece. The lock does not work. 36.25″ Wide 17.25″ Tall 17″ Deep (front to back) The interior storage is approx 34.5″ Wide, 15.5″ deep (front to back) and 11.5″ high to the top of the “box”.
