Offered for your review and consideration is this simply majestic and absolutely gorgeous, incredible hand painted Chinese wooden base with brass electrical assembly, early 20th century table lamp. Not only is the Chinese landscape painting magnificently rendered and artistically realized at a very high level, but the theme of the figurative landscape painting, which circumnavigates the entire lamp, portrays military graphic iconography, namely the scene of an ambush ready to take place, where two Chinese soldiers with long spears, sit ready and poised to deliver their deadly blows from above, perched on a rocky outcropping or bluff, at the unsuspecting warriors on horseback on the ground below. This was painted by Chinese artists and is not an example of European inspired’Chinoiserie’ which was popular at the same time. This is a Chinese export or trade piece, where the wooden base was electrified and made into a table lamp. A small crack on the sidewall, most likely from a previous drop which occurred long ago, is the only real strike or mark against it. No attempt has been made to’fill,”in-paint’ or to otherwise disguise or remedy this condition issue. Its structural integrity hasn’t been compromised as a result of this unfortunate, previous tumble. It remains a beautiful table lamp, in working condition, with its original three-way electrical assembly, which has naturally aged brass metal patina. An extraordinary piece of early 20th century Chinese hand painted and hand decorated early electrified lighting, as well as period Chinese figurative landscape painting. As far as period table lamps go, this is a bonafide killer. When table lamps cease being mere table lamps.
