FEATURED: One of the more unusual wooden primitive masks we’ve ever found, this enigmatic’old soul’ face, with his intense, serious eyes & those wrinkles under them, his thin, curved nose and full mouth, decorative plugs in both ears, and a decorative turban with a stylized lotus design, stopped us instantly when we saw him. He is not your typical demon/devil/monster/animal creation, but has the face of a human that perhaps could be found in real life, somewhere, at some point of time, which we thought was very interesting, too. Hand-carved and decorated of a local tropical wood, a simple piece, not highly decorated, not painted up like so many tribal/ethnographic pieces are, we wondered who had made this fascinating being. We also were not sure if he was an actual mask that had been worn in ceremonies, as there were no holes for rope or fastenings to tie onto one’s head, only a hole at the top, as if to hang on a wall. Its back is lightly painted in old dark paint, partially, as we found it, and there were no markings/signature anywhere. Where was he from, and what was he meant to be? A shamanistic being, a sadhu, a priest? Certainly he offers a sense, at least to us, of a spiritual presence and power, of positivity, and reminded us of those Indonesian shadow & rod puppets, or somewhere in the Pacfic Rim of ancient countries, an ancient Indian holyman’s face, perhaps. We’d love to know who made this super piece, and see what else he created, but we think the artist is no more, that this is an old piece, in addition to being an’old soul’, and we may never solve this mystery. We certainly could not find anything similar online. If only this being could communicate his history somehow. We feel he can offer his new home a very positive, protective juju, and certainly he will create a peaceful, zen feeling in whatever room he is in, as he has no menacing vibe about him, no’devil’ mask here, just the face and spirit of a being who has seen much and is very philosophical and content with where he is. The wood is slightly curved, as shown in one of the photos, and is a tropical local unidentified wood. Hand-carved and decorated, with a hole to hang it on the wall at the top. Origin and maker/tribe/culture and date of creation are unknown. We do not feel this is a’new’ piece, as it was in a collection where its owner stopped traveling several decades ago. This face’mask’ will be a wonderful mystery for its new owner to try to solve, as well as being, we feel, very good company, too, and hopefully a protector to its new home and owner.
